What the differences mean
Every club the two sets share has exactly the same loft, starting with a 32° 7-iron. On paper there is no distance or trajectory difference: with the same swing, a 7-iron from either set should launch and carry about the same. The real differences are in how the heads are built, how they look at address and how they feel at impact, none of which a spec table can show.
Both are players distance irons, built for roughly 5 to 15 handicaps who want extra distance from a compact head. Forged or multi-material heads that keep a compact look while adding face technology and stronger lofts for distance. Because they target the same golfer, the decision comes down to the specific loft, feel and shaping differences rather than who the sets are made for.
The 1031 is listed as forged, mid-size head and the 902-PD as hollow body, forged. The 902-PD's hollow body lets the face flex more and moves mass low and outward, usually giving higher launch and more ball speed on off-centre strikes than the 1031, at some cost in feel.
The 902-PD came out 3 years after the 1031, but it is a different line rather than a direct replacement, so the two were designed for different golfers as well as different seasons.
