Hybrid Loft Chart

What degree each hybrid is, which iron each loft replaces, and the stock lofts every major manufacturer currently builds.

Hybrids run from about 17° to 28°, and the loft maps directly onto the long iron it replaces: 19°–21° stands in for a 3-iron, 22°–24° for a 4-iron, 25°–27° for a 5-iron. The number stamped on the head follows the same convention as the iron, but lofts vary by a degree or two between brands — so gap by loft, and expect a hybrid to carry slightly further than the iron it replaces.

Equivalences assume modern iron lofts; against a traditional or blade set (see the iron loft chart) shift everything about one club weaker. The same loft carries further in a hybrid than in the iron.

Match the loft, then check the carry

A hybrid is a long-iron replacement, so the fitting logic starts from the iron it displaces: find the loft of the iron coming out of the bag and buy the hybrid within a degree of it. Then check the gap on the course. The hybrid's longer shaft and deeper centre of gravity usually add half a club of carry at the same loft, which is welcome at the top of the bag and a problem if it opens a hole above your 5-iron.

Adjustable hosels, where fitted, move most current hybrids a degree or two either way — enough to close a gap without reordering the set. The per-model pages above chart each family's settings.

Frequently asked questions

What loft hybrid replaces a 3-iron?

19°–21°. Match the lofts rather than the numbers: a modern 3-iron is 19°–21° and so is a 3-hybrid. But expect the hybrid to carry half a club further at the same loft — its longer shaft and lower, deeper centre of gravity add ball speed and launch — so some players take one degree more loft in the hybrid.

Do hybrids go further than irons of the same loft?

Usually, by roughly 5–10 yards. The hybrid's shaft is longer and its centre of gravity sits further back, which adds ball speed and launch. That is a feature when replacing a long iron and a problem when it stacks on top of a full set — check the gap to your longest iron rather than assuming the numbers line up.

What hybrid should a beginner carry?

More loft than instinct suggests: a 22°–25° hybrid in place of the 4- and 5-irons is the single easiest upgrade. Low-lofted 17°–19° hybrids need nearly as much speed as the long irons they replace.

Hybrid or fairway wood for the same slot?

The same loft flies higher and further in a fairway wood, shorter and more controlled in a hybrid. Pick the wood for distance slots and par-5 seconds, the hybrid where you want an iron's trajectory with more forgiveness — and hold each slot with only one of them.

How these figures were compiled:
  • Loft bands and the iron equivalences are the accepted club-fitting conventions, given as ranges because no governing body defines them and shaft length and head design move every one of them.
  • Brand and model figures come from the LoftChart spec archive — the per-model pages linked above, each compiled from the manufacturer’s own spec sheets and source-attributed — last verified in October 2026.
