Lofts differ on 9 of the 11 clubs the two sets share. A lower point is a stronger loft.

What the differences mean

At the 7-iron, the Karsten I is 36.5° and the Eye is 36°, a 0.5° gap. Each degree of loft is worth roughly 3 to 4 yards of carry at the same swing speed, so the Eye should carry about 2 yards further with that club, on a slightly lower, shallower flight than the Karsten I. Across the 11 clubs both sets share, the differences roughly cancel out, with the largest gap at the 8-iron (41.3° vs 40°). The pitching wedges are 51° and 50.5°; the stronger one leaves a 0.5° jump to a 50° gap wedge, which matters when planning wedge gapping. Beyond loft, the Eye 7-iron sits 0.8° flatter (63.3° vs 62.5°), which nudges start direction slightly right for a right-hander.

The sets are built differently: the Karsten I runs 1-iron to SW (11 clubs), the Eye 1-iron to LW (12 clubs).

Both are game improvement irons, built for roughly 10 to 25 handicaps. Perimeter-weighted cavity backs with wider soles, more offset and stronger lofts, aimed at mid handicaps. Because they target the same golfer, the decision comes down to the specific loft, feel and shaping differences rather than who the sets are made for.

The Karsten I is listed as investment cast cavity back, heel-toe balanced and the Eye as investment cast. With the build method this similar, differences in feel come down to head size, sole width, topline and offset rather than how the heads are made.

There are 9 years between these sets (1969 and 1978), more than one design generation. Over that time irons moved toward stronger lofts, thinner and faster faces, hollow and multi-material heads and wider use of tungsten, so the newer set is not simply a better version of the older one: it may launch and spin quite differently. Here the 7-iron loft moved from 36.5° to 36°.

Which should you choose?

The Eye is the stronger-lofted set — up to 1.3° stronger than the Karsten I on matching clubs. Expect longer carry per numbered iron but a flatter descent angle; gapping at the wedge end is where that shows up.

Both charts are reproduced in full on their own pages: Ping Karsten I specs and Ping Eye specs.
