Driver Loft by Swing Speed

Swing speed sets the loft window. Find your band, then let attack angle and ball flight settle the exact number.

The slower the swing, the more loft the driver needs. Under 85 mph the right answer is 11°–13°; between 85 and 95 mph — where most male amateurs sit — it is 10.5°–12°; from 95 to 105 mph it is 9°–10.5°; and only above about 105 mph does a driver lofted under 9° start paying for itself.

Speeds are driver clubhead speed, not ball speed. Carry figures assume a reasonable strike; thin and heel strikes shed distance at every speed.

Why slower swings need more loft

Carry distance is launch angle, backspin and ball speed working together. The distance-maximising window for an amateur is roughly a 12°–16° launch with 2,000–3,000 rpm of spin. A fast swing reaches that window with a low-lofted face because sheer ball speed does the climbing; a slower swing launched at 9° comes out low and under-spun, runs out of hang time, and lands 15–20 yards short of the same swing with a 12° face. Loft is how a moderate swing buys the airtime a fast swing gets free.

Adjust for attack angle

The table assumes a roughly level strike. If you hit up on the ball — teeing high, ball forward, driver sweeping upward 3°–4° — you add that much launch and can sit at the low end of your band, or a band lower. If you hit down on it, as most slicers and former iron-first golfers do, move up within the band. A launch monitor reads attack angle directly; ball flight hints at it too, with a low-spinning knuckling drive suggesting up, and a high-spinning ballooning one suggesting down.

Use the hosel to fine-tune, not to span bands

An adjustable hosel moves most current drivers ±1°–2°, which comfortably covers fine-tuning within a band — a 10.5° head plays anywhere from about 9.5° to 12°. What it does not do is turn a tour head into a beginner’s driver: the head’s centre of gravity and face design are built around its stated loft. Buy the loft in the middle of your band and adjust from there; the driver loft chart lists what each brand sells.

What driver loft do I need for an 85 mph swing speed?

10.5 to 12 degrees. At 85 mph the ball leaves the face around 125 mph, which needs a high launch and healthy backspin to maximise carry. An adjustable 10.5 degree head turned up a degree is a sensible way to cover the whole window.

What driver loft is best for a 95 mph swing?

9.5 to 10.5 degrees for most players. 95 mph sits on the boundary between the mid and fast bands, so attack angle decides it: hit up on the ball and 9.5 works, hit level or down and 10.5 carries further.

What loft should a 100 mph swing use?

9 to 10.5 degrees. At 100 mph a well-struck drive carries around 240 yards, and the launch-spin window is wide enough that strike pattern and attack angle matter more than the degree on the sole. This is the speed where a proper fitting starts paying for itself.

Does more loft mean less distance?

Only above the speed that needs it. Below roughly 95 mph, more loft usually means more carry, because the ball stays in the air long enough to use its speed. The lower-loft-equals-longer rule is true at tour speed and false for most amateurs.

How do I find my swing speed without a launch monitor?

Divide your true driver carry — the number in the air, not with roll — by 2.3. A 200 yard carry puts you near 87 mph. It is rough, but it lands you in the right loft band, and any simulator, fitting bay or driving-range monitor will give you the exact figure.
