About the Adams Idea a4

Adams marketed this set as the Idea Tech a4, the better-player half of the 2008 a4 generation that also produced the far more forgiving Idea Tech a4OS. It is a hybrid-iron combo set: the stock eight-club make-up is a 3-hybrid and 4-hybrid in place of the long irons, then six forged 8620 carbon steel irons from the 5-iron to the pitching wedge, with a quad cavity back, a forged stabiliser bar behind the face and a four-way cambered sole. Lofts run 26 degrees at the 5-iron to 45 degrees at the pitching wedge, with a 33-degree 7-iron, and matching GW, SW and LW were offered to extend the set. Only the iron clubs are listed below; the stock 3-hybrid (19 degrees, 59.25-degree lie, 40.5 inches) and 4-hybrid (22 degrees, 60-degree lie, 39.25 inches) are hybrids built around Adams' Boxer Technology rather than irons. Swing weights below are the steel-shaft figures - the same heads build to D1 with the stock graphite shafts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the loft of an Adams Idea a4 7-iron?

The Adams Idea a4 7-iron has a loft of 33 degrees, with a 62-degree lie and a 37.25-inch steel-shaft length.

What clubs come in a stock Adams Idea a4 set?

Eight clubs. A 3-hybrid and a 4-hybrid replace the long irons, followed by forged 5-iron through pitching wedge. Matching 50-degree GW, 55-degree SW and 60-degree LW heads were sold to extend the set.

Is the Adams Idea a4 the same club as the Idea Tech a4?

Yes. Adams sold it as the Idea Tech a4. It should not be confused with the Idea Tech a4OS, which is a much more forgiving cast set built around seven hybrids rather than two hybrids and six forged irons.

Are Adams Idea a4 irons forged?

The irons are, from 8620 carbon steel with a quad cavity back and a forged stabiliser bar behind the impact area. The 3-hybrid and 4-hybrid that come with the set are not forged irons.

Finding a used set

The Adams Idea a4 is no longer in production, so the used market is the only source. Search eBay, 2nd Swing, Golf Avenue and the PGA Tour Superstore trade-in listings, and check the loft and lie against the chart above before buying — sets this age have often been bent from standard.

Data compiled from:
  • Adams Golf official Idea Tech a4 iron page, specs tab, retrieved from http://web.archive.org/web/20081022160957/http://www.adamsgolf.com/products/irons/a4.php - contemporaneous manufacturer spec table giving loft, lie, length and graphite/steel swing weight for the 3-hybrid, 4-hybrid and 5-iron through PW, plus the stock shaft and grip list
  • Adams Golf legacy Idea Tech a4 iron page, specs tab, retrieved from http://web.archive.org/web/2011/http://www.adamsgolf.com/products/irons/a4.php?page=specs - the later manufacturer capture of the same chart, which additionally lists the GW (50 degrees, 8-degree bounce), SW (55 degrees, 12-degree bounce) and LW (60 degrees, 8-degree bounce) extension wedges and the eight-club 3H/4H/5-PW set make-up. The 5-iron through PW rows match the 2008 capture exactly
  • InTheHoleGolf.com Adams Idea Tech a4 Iron Set page (https://www.intheholegolf.com/AGA4IS/Adams-Idea-Tech-a4-Iron-Set.html) - independent corroboration of the same loft/lie/length table and of the two-hybrid-plus-six-forged-irons make-up
  • The 2008 introduction is dated from the earliest Wayback capture of the Adams product page, 9 September 2008, which is the same day Adams issued its Idea Tech a4OS press release (GlobeNewswire, 9 September 2008); Adams also promoted the a4 as a Golf Digest 2009 Hot List gold winner. year_discontinued is 2009, the year the successor Idea a7 was announced
  • Note on naming: Adams' own product pages and packaging call this club the Idea Tech a4. It is recorded here as Idea a4 to match the lineage reference used elsewhere in this database
  • One conflict: the 2008 capture gives the 3-hybrid length as 40.5 inches and the later legacy capture gives 40 inches. The 3-hybrid is not an iron and is not listed in the specs above; the contemporaneous 40.5-inch figure, which InTheHoleGolf also carries, is the one quoted in the description
