About the Adams Idea Tech a4OS

The Idea Tech a4OS is the maximum-forgiveness half of Adams' 2008 a4 generation, launched 1 November 2008 as the successor to the Idea a3 OS and the far more forgiving sibling of the standard Idea Tech a4 (recorded in this dataset as Idea a4). It is a hybrid-iron combo set built around Boxer Technology, a magnesium crown and dual tungsten heel-toe weighting: the stock eight-club make-up is described by Adams as "3-PW, including seven hybrids" - full 3, 4 and 5 hybrids followed by iron-like hybrid heads at 6, 7, 8 and 9 and a conventional pitching wedge. Lofts run from 19 degrees at the 3-hybrid to 44 degrees at the pitching wedge, one to four degrees stronger through the set than the standard Idea Tech a4, which uses only two hybrids ahead of six forged irons. The set won a Golf Digest 2009 Hot List gold award as a Category Leader in Innovation in the super-game-improvement group before Adams replaced it with the Idea a7 OS in August 2009.

Frequently asked questions

What is the loft of an Adams Idea Tech a4OS 7-iron?

32 degrees, with a 62.25-degree lie and a 37.5-inch length. Like the rest of the mid-set, this '7' is an iron-like hybrid head rather than a conventional forged iron.

What clubs come in a stock Adams Idea Tech a4OS set?

Eight clubs, described by Adams as '3-PW, including seven hybrids': full 3, 4 and 5 hybrids, then iron-like hybrid heads at 6, 7, 8 and 9, and a conventional pitching wedge. Matching GW, SW and LW heads were sold separately to extend the set.

What is the difference between the Idea Tech a4 and the Idea Tech a4OS?

The standard Idea Tech a4 uses only a 3-hybrid and 4-hybrid ahead of six forged 8620 carbon-steel irons running 26 degrees at the 5-iron. The a4OS is the far more forgiving cast version, replacing five more clubs with hybrid or hybrid-style heads and running one to four degrees stronger through the set, with a 19-degree 3-hybrid and a 44-degree pitching wedge.

Finding a used set

The Adams Idea Tech a4OS ran from 2008 to 2009 and is no longer in production, so the used market is the only source. Search eBay, 2nd Swing, Golf Avenue and the PGA Tour Superstore trade-in listings, and check the loft and lie against the chart above before buying — sets this age have often been bent from standard.

Swing weights above use the graphite (SW-G) column, the only option offered on the 3, 4 and 5 hybrids; steel is offered only on the 6 through PW positions and runs one point heavier, building to D2 uniformly across 6 through 9 and matching the pitching wedge's D2

  • year_discontinued is 2009, the year Adams announced the successor Idea a7 OS (6 August 2009, per the sourcing on data/adams/idea-a7-os-irons.yaml, whose predecessor field records this model as 'Adams Idea Tech a4OS'). Individual GW, SW and LW extension heads (approximately 49, 55 and 58 degrees per secondhand marketplace listings on eBay and SidelineSwap) were sold separately to extend the set, but no manufacturer table corroborating their lie/length/bounce was found, so they are omitted from specs above rather than estimated
