What the differences mean
Every club the two sets share has exactly the same loft, starting with a 32° 7-iron. On paper there is no distance or trajectory difference: with the same swing, a 7-iron from either set should launch and carry about the same. The real differences are in how the heads are built, how they look at address and how they feel at impact, none of which a spec table can show. Lie angles and lengths match as well, so any fitting adjustment made to one set would carry straight over to the other.
The sets are built differently: the SMS runs 4-iron to GW (8 clubs), the SMS Pro 3-iron to PW (8 clubs).
The SMS is a players distance iron and the SMS Pro a players iron, so they sit one step apart on the forgiveness scale. The SMS is the more forgiving design, with a wider sole, more offset and more perimeter weighting for roughly 5 to 15 handicaps who want extra distance from a compact head. The SMS Pro trades some of that for a more compact head, thinner topline and more control over flight and shape, which suits roughly scratch to 10 handicaps.
The SMS is listed as hollow body with plasma-welded maraging steel face cup and urethane foam fill and the SMS Pro as one-piece forged cavity with movable weight ports and CNC-milled tri-step sole. The SMS's hollow body lets the face flex more and moves mass low and outward, usually giving higher launch and more ball speed on off-centre strikes than the SMS Pro, at some cost in feel.
The SMS Pro came out 1 year after the SMS, but it is a different line rather than a direct replacement, so the two were designed for different golfers as well as different seasons.
