About the TaylorMade rac MB

The rac MB was TaylorMade's muscleback blade of the rac era, shipping from February 2003 as the workability-focused top of the range above the rac LT and rac OS. It is coin-forged from low-carbon steel with precision-milled rac Feel Pockets in the back to tune impact feel, a narrow sole with a blunt leading edge, and a compact head with a high, forward centre of gravity for a controllable, low flight. The stock set runs 1-iron through pitching wedge on Tour Flighted Precision Rifle steel shafts, with a 36-degree 7-iron and 48-degree pitching wedge. Specs below are the standard steel-shaft build; published swingweights are D2 (D3 pitching wedge) in the 6.0-7.0 Rifle flexes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the loft of a TaylorMade rac MB 7-iron?

The TaylorMade rac MB 7-iron has a loft of 36 degrees, with a 61.5-degree lie and a 36.75-inch steel-shaft length.

Did the TaylorMade rac MB come with a 1-iron?

Yes, unusually for its era the rac MB was offered from a 17-degree 1-iron all the way through the 48-degree pitching wedge, in right- and left-handed models.

What shafts did the rac MB use?

The stock shaft was the Precision Tour Flighted Rifle in 5.0 through 7.0 flexes, frequency-matched through the set. Dynamic Gold, Dynamic Gold Sensicore and LT Rifle options were available through custom order.

Finding a used set

The TaylorMade rac MB ran from 2003 to 2006 and is no longer in production, so the used market is the only source. Search eBay, 2nd Swing, Golf Avenue and the PGA Tour Superstore trade-in listings, and check the loft and lie against the chart above before buying — sets this age have often been bent from standard.

Data compiled from:
  • TaylorMade official rac MB Irons sell sheet, RAC MB IRONS specifications table (loft, lie, bounce, offset in mm, graphite and steel lengths, Rifle flexes, swingweights, Tour Velvet grip; coin-forged construction, nickel chrome plating, February 2003 shipping note), taylormadegolf.com/docs/productspecs/03_racMB_Irons.pdf via web.archive.org
  • Swingweight note: the sheet prints D2.0/D1.5 (D3.0/D2.5 pitching wedge) depending on shaft flex; the D2/D3 values here are the 6.0-7.0 flex builds
  • Succession: the rac TP MB, published on TaylorMade's 06_rac_TP_MB sell sheet with April 2006 availability, replaced the rac MB as the muscleback blade
