About the MacGregor VIP

This VIP is the 2010 relaunch of MacGregor's most famous iron name under Golfsmith, which had acquired the brand rights in May 2009 after MacGregor ceased US operations. It is not the 1967 Nicklaus VIP or the 1990s VIP by Jack Nicklaus line — no verifiable factory spec table survives for those — but a modern players iron: forged from 1020 carbon steel on an 800-ton press with a precision-milled muscle cavity and a thin topline, pitched at players who want shot-making and feel with a little help. Lofts are traditional for a players iron of the era, with a 35-degree 7-iron and 47-degree pitching wedge across the stock 3-PW set, and KBS Tour steel was the stock shaft. A VIP Pro tour prototype had been spotted on tour as early as 2008 while the relaunch was being prepared.

Frequently asked questions

What is the loft of a MacGregor VIP (2010) 7-iron?

The 2010 MacGregor VIP 7-iron has a loft of 35 degrees, a lie of 62.5 degrees and a length of 37 inches.

Is the 2010 MacGregor VIP the same as the Jack Nicklaus VIP?

No. The 1967 VIP and the 1990s VIP by Jack Nicklaus lines are earlier, unrelated designs; no verifiable factory spec tables survive for them. The 2010 VIP is a Golfsmith-era relaunch of the name on a modern forged muscle-cavity players iron.

What shaft came in the 2010 MacGregor VIP irons?

KBS Tour steel in regular or stiff flex was the stock shaft, per MacGregor's own product page.

Production status

Introduced in 2010, the MacGregor VIP has no confirmed end date on file. LoftChart records a discontinuation year only where a source dates it, and none has been found for this set, so it may or may not still be in the MacGregor catalogue — check with MacGregor or a retailer before counting on a new set. Used sets appear on eBay, and should be measured against the chart above before buying, since irons are routinely bent from standard.

Data compiled from:
  • macgregorgolf.com official VIP product page, 28 December 2010 Wayback capture (web.archive.org/web/20101228161205id_/macgregorgolf.com) — the full manufacturer loft/lie/length table used here, KBS Tour stock shaft, forged-1020/muscle-cavity construction copy
  • Note: the earlier 17 April 2010 capture of the same page misprints the 5-iron loft as 21 degrees; the December 2010 capture and all later ones correct it to 27 degrees, which fits the ladder and is used here

  • golfbusinessnews.com 'Golfsmith acquires rights to MacGregor Golf' (May 2009) — the brand's passage to Golfsmith, dating the relaunch era; no end-of-production year was ever published, so year_discontinued is left open (the page was still being served unchanged into 2012)
